The Beginning of SG Equinox – A Story of Growth and Impact
In September 2018, in the picturesque village of Trsino near the city of Vinica, a significant moment in the scouting history of North Macedonia took place. With the support of the European Scout Foundation (ESF) and the Scout Association of Macedonia, the first scout camp of SG Equinox – Stip was organized. Until then, scouting had not existed in Stip, but a group of ambitious young people decided to change that and become part of the world’s largest youth movement.
With symbolic but crucial support from ESF, which provided €3,200 in funding for the project, this three-day camp was more than just an event—it was the foundation of a thriving scout group that continues to grow today. The camp served as both a recruitment initiative and the official launch of SG Equinox – Stip. Thanks to the support received, the group was able to organize three promotional events in primary schools, secure essential resources such as food and transportation, and provide materials for camp activities. Additionally, it was through this support that SG Equinox received its very first scout scarves, marking the beginning of a proud scouting tradition in Stip.
Today, SG Equinox – Stip has grown into a dynamic scout group with more than 70 active members across six patrols. Over the years, the organization has positively influenced more than 400 children and young people, leaving a lasting educational impact on the community. The initial support from the European Scout Foundation was instrumental in this journey, not only enabling the group’s establishment but also contributing to its capacity-building and long-term sustainability. It serves as a testament to how even small gestures of support in scouting can lead to significant changes, both locally and nationally.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey is seeing how the first participants of that inaugural camp remain active members to this day. Seven years later, they continue to grow, develop their skills, and pass on their knowledge to younger generations, ensuring the continuity of scouting values and traditions.
Reflections from Scouts Who Were There
Viktor Pavlovski:
“My first experience as a scout dates back to 2018. It was my first time using a tent and sleeping without my parents. I remember the warmth of the campfire, the shared conversations, the singing… It was also the first time I held a real bow. However, the most valuable lesson I learned in scouting was to always help others. Despite being young at the time, one memory that stands out is how I accidentally broke my glasses in my tent. I was scared and spent half the night crying, but my leaders reassured me, making me feel part of a true family. That moment truly embodied the spirit of scouting.”
David Gjoshev:
“Attending the camp in Trsino at the age of 13 was one of my earliest scouting experiences, where I was introduced to archery, knots, kayaking, and more. Through my years in scouting, I have built friendships with people from all over the world and shared unforgettable adventures—campfire gatherings lasting until dawn, environmental actions, and challenging hikes. Scouting has taught me life skills every single day, but most importantly, it has shown me how to become a better person.”
Filip Malinov:
“The 2018 camp in Trsino was one of my first scouting experiences. At 14 years old, I learned essential skills such as knots, archery, kayaking, setting up tents, and building campfires. Over my seven years in scouting, I have gained not only technical skills but also values that have shaped me into a better person. I now have the knowledge and experience to guide younger scouts on their own journeys. One of my most exciting scouting experiences was the tri-national camp in France in 2022, which expanded my horizons and deepened my appreciation for international scouting.”
Scouting: A Movement That Changes Lives
The story of SG Equinox – Stip is a perfect example of how a single opportunity, supported by the European Scout Foundation, can spark the growth of a lifelong scouting journey. What started as a small camp in 2018 has now evolved into a well-established scout group, actively contributing to the development of young people and the local community. The initial support provided by ESF not only enabled the foundation of the group but also set in motion a chain of positive changes that continue to this day.
This testimonial stands as an inspiration for aspiring scout leaders and young people across Europe. It highlights the power of scouting to transform lives, create friendships, and build resilient communities. SG Equinox – Stip is a testament to the fact that when young people are given the right opportunities, they can create meaningful, lasting change—both for themselves and for those who follow in their footsteps.
