Accomodati-ON

Project Description

The 955th scout troop has been present for 10 years in the heart of Debrecen. The number of members has been increasing rapidly in the last 5 years. Currently we operate with 10 patrols and this number is growing by 3-4 every year. The Patrol Leaders Council consists of 21 members, and the whole troop counts 102 scouts. At the same time, our infrastructural needs have also been growing. Our current depositary, and ruinous scout house has to be rebuilt, so patrols can meet in a safe environment and leaders can educate them along the scout method to their best.

The new home would help us attract potential new members and increase their number in our troop, which is a significant and permanent intention of ours. We have been working tirelessly to accomplish the goals described above since the beginning of the project, and we have made some serious progress. We have made disinsection and disinfection during an overall cleanup, we have sorted out the unnecessary furniture then we started to transform the place. After remaking the plastering, we painted the walls and radiators, oiled the wainscot panels, bought new furniture and refurbished our iconic benches. As we collect more and more experience we also adjust our plans to make them more viable.  The accommodati-ON project would not have the chance to be fully implemented without some sort of support. The steps we have listed in the last paragraph of objectives have been financed from our own resources, but the ones below need to be funded from external sources. We intend to finish this project by August 2022. First, we would replace the parquet flooring of 70 m2, which has become rather decrepit over the years. The old flooring would be replaced by a type of laminate flooring. The work would continue with renoval of the entrance door and building in new windows as the present ones do not function properly since they cannot be closed. Moreover, they are also unaesthetic. We would also be happy to ensure a greater supply of equipment by providing a projector, which would help us relive common memories, the leaders’ council meetings could be held in a more convenient and professional way and the patrols would be able to watch educational content as well. After the major work has been done we would give our patrols the chance to create a more personal atmosphere by placing their own cupboards, plants, and further decorations. The number of our equipment and tools has enlarged over the last 2 years, therefore we need to arrange them in a way to maximally utilise the capacity of our wareroom. We could take advantage of its 2.6 m interior height with the shelving we have designed. This way our gear would be accessible, neatly organised, and logically arranged.

Project Objectives

To create this ideal environment, we started the Accommodati-ON project in September 2020, with which we will achieve 5 different goals.

First of all, we are to make our scout home safe in order to be a proper location for the patrol meetings.

Besides that, we keep in mind its nice, aesthetic and organized appearance with which we would like to create a homelike milieu where everything has its place. This venue would have the potential to become a great educational tool to show our scouts the necessity of taking responsibility for their environment.

Next, we want to give an opportunity to our patrols to express their team spirit through paintings, drawings, plants and others. Last but not least, we want to execute the project in a way that our leaders can learn and improve their (craft) skills.

This last objective is a perfect tool for creating programs that are REAL (Relevant, Exciting, Accessible, Learner-Led).

Since our goals are highly reconcilable with the Sustainable Development Goals (as we provide quality education and create a sustainable community), we intend to join the WOSM in implementing them and therefore execute our project accordingly.
